Sri Lanka image enhanced at UNESCO
The Permanent Delegation of Sri Lanka to UNESCO in association with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in France organised the annual Sri Lanka Bazaar for the fourth consecutive year on Wednesday, 23 June 2010.
 
The event, which was held at the ‘Cercle de Delegue’ at UNESCO brought together several Sri Lankan and French nationals, involved in the promotion of Sri Lankan food, handicrafts and garments among other gift items. Geared towards the promotion of Sri Lanka and multiplicity of attributes the country has to offer, the event has evolved over the years into a much looked forward to and well attended promotional event.

President appoints Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed the eight member ‘Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation’ Commission to report on the lessons to be learnt from the events in the period, Feb 2002 to May 2009, their attendant concerns and to recommend measures to ensure that there will be no recurrence of such a situation.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris was the location for more commemoration ceremonies held in the French capital to mark the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of Lord Buddha

Following the ‘Heel Dhana’ that was held for members of the Maha Sangha on Friday, 28 May 2010 under the patronage of the Ven. Kongasdeniya Ananda thero, which was attended by several other Venerable theros, the Embassy organised a Special ‘Dharma Deshanawa’ by the Ven Olande Ananda Thero at its premises on Sunday, 30 May 2010.

Vesak Commemorations in France

The commemoration of the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of Lord Buddha in the season of Vesak was observed at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris.
A series of religious ceremonies are being held in Buddhist temples in the French capital in the course of the Vesak week with blessings bestowed on the President and people of Sri Lanka.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrated in Paris
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris observed the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with ceremonies at its premises on 15th April 2010.

At the commencement of the ceremony, the Chargé d’ Affaires of the Embassy, Ms. W. S. Perera read out the New Year Message of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and highlighted the call made for the ‘New Year festivities to seek to further unite our people in heart and mind.’ It was also noted that ‘The New Year celebrations by Sinhalese and Tamils alike are most appropriate in recognizing the kinship among us. This is the continuance of strong cultural traditions that strengthen the bonds among the people of our land.’

Sri Lanka prepared for Parliamentary Elections
Sri Lanka is poised at a crucial juncture in her history as the people of the country prepare to cast their vote to elect the next Parliament of Sri Lanka.
Since the first Parliamentary election, conducted in 1947, a year before Sri Lanka gained independence, many elections have returned Members to the legislative body which is today a pillar of democratic governance prevalent in Sri Lanka.
Tomorrow, 08 April 2010 is yet another day on which a tradition incorporated in 1931 is activated once again as 14,088,500 registered voters have the opportunity of exercising their franchise and electing candidates of their choice.
Sri Lanka Embassy in France geared towards enhancing the Sinhala and Tamil languages and cultures
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in France initiated a project to promote Sinhala and Tamil languages among children of the Sri Lankan community residing in France with a view to promoting the Sinhala and Tamil cultures.
The project would be geared towards enabling children of Sri Lankan origin to sit for Ordinary Level examinations in Sinhala and Tamil conducted by the Government of Sri Lanka.
The first distribution of text books received from the Educational Publications Department was held at the Embassy on Sunday, 21st February 2010 under the auspices of the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Achala Jagoda, who was on a working visit to Paris.
